Salomon Trail Zip Tech Tee Review

The Salomon Trail Runner II 1/2 Zip Tech Tee is a lightweight, technical running top. If features ventilation panels and gel pockets for longer runs. I challenged Salomon’s performance claims thoroughly by running in 30degree C heat with humidity at a high of 85%. So how did it get on?

Design

Salomon have always worked hard to make their garments look stylish and professional, and this top is no exception. The fit is both snug and comfortable but still allows excellent freedom of movement without feeling restricted. The patterning is flattering with the cut friendly to the female form. The darker green mesh under the arms/side panels and across the back is functional and sleek. I was impressed with the discrete gel pockets which tuck in neatly at the back and do not detract from the cut. These are accessible and secure and could easily accommodate keys or an mp3 player.

Colours

Initially I was a little wary of the green colouring however once I tried the top on, I was converted. Anyway, there are plenty other colours to choose from should green not appeal to you.

Material

The ActiLITE material gives the top an incredibly light, airy and cool feel. This Salomon Smart Skin technology claims to regulate body temperature keeping you cool in warmer climes, with the ActiLITE polymockeylet fabric keeping you dry with total breathability. I can vouch for these claims having tested it in challenging humidity and heat. Despite these conditions, I didn’t end up with that sticky feel you can get with some materials. It also features helpful reflective branding both front and back to aid visibility when running in the dark.

Fit

Be warned – Salomon sizes come up small. I’m 5ft 2” and usually take size small. However the medium fitted me perfectly so don’t feel as if you’ve eaten too many pies if you have to order a size up from normal!

Rubbing

I experienced no rubbing despite running 20K in the heat. Salomon uses ‘flatlock’ seams to minimise discomfort which seemed be effective – I had no complaints or chafing!

Neck zip

The zip is of high quality and discrete. It allows further ventilation when the going gets tough and it is also robust enough to cope with my uncoordinated yanking at it during a hard run.

Ventilation

The ActiLITE stretch mesh on the side panels and across the back allows the breeze generated by running to pass through easily, cooling the body. Despite the extreme heat and humidity, the top did not cling to my body, something that can’t be said for other running tops I’ve tried. The technology behind all the materials used is successfully directed towards maximising the cooling effect of the top.

Value for money

Retailing at approximately £35, I rate this as a good price for the quality and detail that has gone into the design.

Conclusion

This is a high quality running top and Salomon has again demonstrated that it understands the needs of runners. Their attention to detail is impressive, from the effective cooling properties of the ActiLITE fabrics to the discrete gel pockets and, as a bonus; it looks good too with its stylish and feminine cut. This has definitely become my favourite running top and one that gets pulled out for special events.
